New social media project – #DiscoverJewishCulture

Aug 20, 2024 | JMW News

We are pleased to present the innovative educational project #DiscoverJewishCulture. The aim of the new social media format is to make Jewish life, Jewish history and Jewish culture in Vienna and Austria accessible to a broader and, above all, younger target group.

#DiscoverJewishCulture brings Jewish history to life online
With #DiscoverJewishCulture, the Jewish Museum Vienna expands its mission to convey the broad spectrum of Jewish culture, religion, and history in Austria. In light of growing societal challenges, such as the rise of antisemitism, it is more urgent than ever to explore new ways of providing information and education. The project specifically targets young people who get their information mainly from social media and have little contact with formal education after school.

The diversity of Jewish culture in short clips
The core of the project consists of short, concise video clips that are regularly published on platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. These clips present the rich diversity of Jewish life in Vienna and beyond in a lively and accessible way. The focus is on topics such as Jewish holidays, culinary traditions, historically significant places and notable personalities. The goal is not only to impart knowledge, but also to spark interest and provide opportunities for deeper engagement with these topics.

Together Against Antisemitism – Prevention through Education
The goal of #DiscoverJewishCulture is to contribute to the prevention of antisemitism through knowledge. By educating young people about Jewish culture and history in an entertaining yet informative way, the project aims to foster a deeper understanding and counter prejudice. The project emphasizes that living together requires active exchange and open discussion of difficult issues.

Collaboration and Networking
The Jewish Museum Vienna works closely with various partners in the development of the content. These include the Jewish Austrian Student Association (JÖH), the IKG Youth, as well as various associations, Jewish restaurants and shops. These collaborations make it possible to incorporate authentic and diverse perspectives into the videos and reach a wide audience.

With #DiscoverJewishCulture, the Jewish Museum Vienna is breaking new ground in its educational work. The project innovatively combines tradition and modernity to make Jewish life in Austria tangible and accessible. It is an important step towards a better understanding and deeper engagement with Jewish culture – and thus an active contribution against antisemitism and for tolerance.
