“In Honor of the Torah.” New virtual exhibition on Google Arts & Culture

Oct 13, 2021 | JMW News

The Jewish Museum Vienna has been part of the Google Arts & Culture platform since 2016 with its exhibition “Our City! Jewish Vienna – Then to Now.” The new online exhibition, “In Honor of the Torah,” has now been published. It features objects from the museum’s collection that are used to decorate the Torah, but also Torah scrolls from the museum archive. These tell about the handling of the sacred scroll and about the customs and identity of the Jewish community in Vienna.

While several objects are permanently on display in the museum’s Visible Storage on Dorotheergasse, other objects, e.g., textiles, cannot be shown permanently due to their fragility. With the online exhibition “In Honor of the Torah,” it is now possible to make these accessible to visitors as well. Moreover, objects can be viewed very close up, thanks to the high-resolution zoom function.
Director Danielle Spera adds: “This is a further step in the implementation of our digital museum strategy. We would like to publish further such projects in the future to make our unique collection even more accessible and visible beyond the museum space.”
