ON THE JEWISH WIG

Thursday, June 11th - Monday, October 12th | Museum Dorotheergasse, Dorotheergasse 11, A-1010 Wien

“I wear my wig for myself. My husband doesn’t care. As far as he’s concerned, I could go about in a bikini.”

Anja Salomonowitz’s film looks at the various questions regarding Jewish wigs. After marriage, Orthodox Jewish women cover their hair in public, usually with a headscarf or tichel, or with a wig or sheitel. People often wonder why women wear wigs, which cannot usually be distinguished from natural hair. Interviews with a Viennese wigmaker and with women who wear wigs not only explore these questions but also provide an insight into the personal perspectives and individual approaches of the wearers.

Anja Salomonowitz lives and works in Vienna. Her films have earned international recognition and won numerous awards, most recently for her feature film Sleeping With A Tiger.
