Read Memories
Thursday, January 22nd - Sunday, February 22nd | Museum Dorotheergasse, Dorotheergasse 11, A-1010 Wien
On the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2026
The Holocaust and Shoah are becoming increasingly abstract concepts, especially for younger people. This is not only because today there are only a few eyewitnesses still alive who can convey the dimension of mass murder through their personal stories, but also because our methods of knowledge transfer rely more on technical innovations than on real human encounters.
Although we now live in a time beyond direct eyewitness testimony, survivors have left us many reports, stories, and experiences from which we can read, recite, and learn.
From January 22 and over the following two weeks, the atrium of the Jewish Museum Vienna will become a reading stage, where actors will read from eyewitness accounts. Between readings, the eyewitness reports from the book series “Memories. Life Stories of Victims of National Socialism”, published by the National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism, will be available for all museum visitors to read before and after the sessions.
